Annual Symposium on Research and Industrial Training of Department of Electronics
The Department of Electronics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, proudly hosted the 12th Annual Symposium on Research and Industrial Training of Electronics (ASRITE 2025) on 9th October 2025. The symposium brought together students, academics, industry professionals, alumni, and distinguished guests to celebrate research excellence, innovation, and the strong partnership between academia and industry.
Coordinated by Mr. Thilina R. Payagala, ASRITE 2025 provided a vibrant platform for final-year Electronics undergraduates to present the outcomes of their final-year research projects and industrial training experiences. The event reflected the Department’s continued commitment to producing graduates equipped with the technical expertise, practical skills, and innovative mindset required to address modern engineering challenges.
The symposium featured an impressive collection of projects spanning intelligent automation, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, renewable energy, the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced communication technologies, and smart industrial applications. Each presentation demonstrated the students’ creativity, technical competence, and commitment to developing practical engineering solutions with real-world impact.
Among the outstanding achievements, Mr. W.W.C.D. Fernando‘s project, “Portable IoT-based Communication and Security System for Fishing Boats”, supervised by Prof. M.A.A. Karunarathna, was recognized as the Best Final Year Research Presenter (Special Degree Program). His research introduced an IoT-enabled communication and security platform designed to enhance the safety of fishing communities through real-time communication, location tracking, and emergency alert capabilities.
In the Joint Major Degree Program, Mr. W.T. Sangeeth‘s project, “Autonomous Portable Water Quality Checker”, supervised by Mr. S.R.L. Gunawardhana, received the Best Final Year Research Project Award. His work presented a compact and intelligent water quality monitoring system capable of delivering rapid and reliable environmental assessments.
Furthermore, his industrial training project, “Automated Functionality Detection System for Outdoor Advertising”, supervised by Mr. P.G.T.R. Payagala, was honoured with the Best Final Year Industrial Training Research Project Award for its innovative approach to automating the monitoring and performance evaluation of outdoor advertising systems.
Another notable recognition was awarded to Mr. D.G.P.M. Shantha, whose project, “Automated Intelligent Fall Detection and Alert System for Elders”, supervised by Dr. W.A.S. Wijesinghe, was also recognized as the Best Final Year Research Project (Joint Major Degree). His research demonstrated an intelligent healthcare monitoring system capable of detecting falls and instantly notifying caregivers, thereby enhancing the safety and independence of elderly individuals.
ASRITE 2025 not only celebrated the academic and research accomplishments of the graduating students, but also reinforced the Department of Electronics’ vision of fostering research-driven education, technological innovation, and meaningful industry engagement. The symposium served as an inspiring platform for knowledge exchange, professional networking, and collaboration, further strengthening the Department’s contribution to advancing engineering research and preparing the next generation of innovators and technology leaders.
