Wayamba University of Sri Lanka is recognized as one of the premier institutions of higher education in the country, currently enrolling over 5,000 students across a diverse array of academic programs offered by six faculties. The Faculty of Applied Sciences encompasses four departments: Computing and Information Systems, Electronics, Industrial Management, and Mathematical Sciences. To foster a vibrant research culture, the university regularly organizes conferences, symposia, and workshops.
The International Workshop on Mathematical Sciences (IWMS) aims to serve as a platform for the mathematical and statistical community to share knowledge and insights on the latest advancements in the field. This biennial event provides researchers with a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading experts from around the world. The Department of Mathematical Sciences has successfully hosted three previous workshops as post-conference events of the Wayamba International Conference (WinC) in 2014, 2016, and 2018, attracting both local and international mathematicians. In 2024, IWMS will convene for the fourth time, featuring participation from both local and international experts in the fields of Mathematics and Statistics. Additionally, this workshop will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history.
Plenary Speakers
Professor Shuichi Kawashima is an Emeritus Professor at Kyushu University (since April 1, 2018) and Adjunct Researcher at Waseda University (since April 1, 2023). With 42 years of dedicated service as a Professor, he has consistently ensured an outstanding experience in teaching and research.
His research focuses on the mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations that model various aspects of gas motion. Professor Kawashima is a distinguished international researcher, renowned for his work on the SHIZUTA–KAWASHIMA CONDITION, which has significantly advanced the study of dissipative hyperbolic systems of balance laws.
Professor Kawashima has held prestigious positions as an invited professor at University of Paris 6 (France), University of Bonn (Germany), and Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and as a visiting professor at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University (USA) and at Academia Sinica (Taiwan).
Throughout his tenure, Professor Kawashima has supervised numerous theses, including those of Master’s, Ph.D., and Postdoctoral students, both locally and internationally. He actively mentored and encouraged his students to engage in the global workforce. He is an accomplished author with a substantial number of scholarly articles to his credit and serves as an editor for several internationally recognized journals.
Professor Kawashima’s steadfast dedication to research and education continues to shape the field of mathematics on a global scale.
Professor Priyantha Wijayatunga is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at Umeå University, Sweden. He earned his BSc (Special) in Mathematics with First Class Honours from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, in 1993, and subsequently obtained a Diploma in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1998. He further advanced his education at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, where he completed both his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Mathematical and Computing Sciences in 2004 and 2007, respectively. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook postdoctoral training in the Department of Computer Science at the same institution before joining Umeå University as a Lecturer in Statistics in 2008.
Professor Wijayatunga’s research focuses on mathematical statistics and its diverse applications, particularly in medicine and social sciences. His areas of expertise include measuring statistical dependencies, causal inference, prediction and classification, machine learning, and the exploration of probability puzzles and paradoxes. He is passionate about enhancing students’ critical thinking skills by training them to solve complex probability challenges, fostering a deeper understanding of statistical concepts.
With 26 years of teaching experience, Professor Wijayatunga has made significant contributions to the academic development of numerous students and has taught tutorials at international doctoral schools. His scholarly work includes 20 papers published in refereed journals, 2 editorials, and 11 discussions on papers by other researchers in major statistical journals. Professor Wijayatunga is dedicated to advancing the field of statistics through both research and education, inspiring the next generation of statisticians along the way.
