Prof. L.B.D.R.P. Wijesundera
Senior Professor
Senior Professor L. B. D. R. P. Wijesundera is a distinguished Sri Lankan academic and researcher specialising in solid-state physics, semiconductor materials, and renewable energy technologies. He is a Senior Professor and Chair of Physics in the Department of Physics and Electronics at the University of Kelaniya and has held several key leadership positions, including Head of the Department and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Professor Wijesundera obtained his B.Sc. (Special) and M.Phil. degrees in Physics from the University of Kelaniya and earned his Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree in Solid State Physics from Kyushu University, Japan. With more than three decades of research experience, he has made significant contributions to the development of semiconductor thin films for photovoltaic solar cells and for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production via electrodeposition.
His research covers semiconductor materials such as Cu₂O, ZnO, CdS, CdTe, CuInS₂, and Cu₂ZnSnS₄, as well as advanced characterisation using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and synchrotron radiation techniques. He has published over 170 research papers, including more than 50 research papers in internationally recognised journals, and has received numerous citations for his work.
Professor Wijesundera has received several prestigious awards, including the Presidential Awards for Scientific Research, National Research Council Merit Awards, Vice-Chancellor’s Awards, and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) Award for the Most Outstanding Senior Researcher in Natural Sciences. He has also contributed to patents and technological innovations in electronics.
Currently, Professor Wijesundera serves as a Senior Professor in the Department of Electronics at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka while on sabbatical leave from the University of Kelaniya.
