Mr. H. P. S. Chandira and Mr. O. P. T. P. Pathirana, special degree students of the Department of Computing and Information Systems, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, won first place and the Gold Medal in the Student Innovation Zone at ACCEL 7.0 – Sustainability & Digital Transformation Expo 2026 for their mobile application, Spendly.
Organised by the Department of Business Management at SLIIT Kandy, the exhibition was held on 24–25 September 2026 at the SLIIT Kandy premises. It provided a platform for students to showcase innovative ideas and technology-based solutions related to sustainability and digital transformation. Four student groups represented the Department of Computing and Information Systems at the event.
Spendly: Simplifying Personal Expense Management
Spendly uses artificial intelligence to simplify personal expense tracking. Users can upload photographs of bills, and the application automatically identifies expense categories and records relevant details. By reducing manual data entry, Spendly helps users monitor their monthly spending and manage their finances more effectively.
The application was developed as part of the coursework for CMIS 3222 – Rapid Application Development. In the Student Innovation Zone competition, second place was awarded to students from SLIIT, while third place was secured by students from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
Showcasing Student Innovation
Alongside Spendly, three other projects demonstrated the range of interests and technical capabilities of CMIS students.
MicroLearn, developed by H. B. M. H. S. Mahagedara and H. G. R. I. Handapangoda, is an AI-assisted mobile learning application featuring short educational videos, an AI chatbot, and AI-generated quizzes. It adapts content according to users’ age groups and encourages continued learning through experience points, leaderboards, and learning streaks.
mMystiq, developed by W. S. R. Fernando, is a movie and television series discovery platform that enables users to search for titles, explore content information, create watchlists, and access streaming content.
Zonely, developed by T. K. S. A. Peiris and P. G. D. S. Thennakoon, is a context-aware mobile application designed to support digital wellbeing and productivity. It offers modes for environments such as Home, School, Library, and Gym, together with focus tools, academic timetables, notifications, flashcards, and wellbeing features. To protect user privacy, location information is processed on the device without uploading raw GPS data to the cloud.
The students received guidance and support from the academic staff of the Department throughout their project development and participation in the exhibition.
The Department of Computing and Information Systems warmly congratulates Mr. Chandira and Mr. Pathirana on their Gold Medal and commends all participating students for representing Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. Their work reflects the creativity, dedication, and practical computing skills fostered within the Department.
