The course modules in Mathematics were designed to provide students with a sound knowledge in degree level Mathematics and required knowledge to study other related subjects in corresponding subject combinations while retaining its core areas of Algebra and Analysis.
The course modules in Mathematical Modelling were especially designed incorporating, as much as possible, the practical aspects of the subject areas with the aim of developing the students’ ability in applying their knowledge to real world problems, which would certainly enhance employability of the graduates in Industry and the Public Service. A number of course modules were introduced in Mathematical Modelling for the second and third year students exposing them to a pragmatic approach to solve the problems in Industry and Commerce, Science and Engineering and Social Sciences.
The course modules in Statistics offered by the Department were developed to equip undergraduates with theories, concepts and tools to have experience in collecting, analyzing, interpreting and working with real data. Also, the number of practical course module were included to the syllabus to give hands on experience and to gain proficiency in using statistical software for data analysis. Moreover, these statistical courses make an appropriate background for higher studies in statistics, economics, social science etc.; or for professional work in many areas like marketing, manufacturing, engineering, banking and finance, and insurance.
At present, the Department offers following 33 course modules including Research projects and Industrial Training in two major subject streams of Mathematics & Mathematical Modelling and Statistics.
